Grassfed? What does that Mean?

What does Grassfed Mama mean?

I’ve always been health conscious. I would say main stream, though… I loved Prevention Magazine and Health magazines.

I was drinking diet coke, eating low fat or sugar free things all the time. And then my body said STOP!!!!

I started having lots of issues with passing out and just feeling horrible.

At this same time, my sister was starting to read lots of books on the whole foods movement. I was curious because my doctor said my issues were possibly related to something I was eating.

I started with “The Maker’s Diet” by Jordan Rubin. Adam and I followed this diet for well over a year without cheating. We were serious about this health thing!

Adam and I both lost weight, we looked amazing! and felt better too.

Then I relaxed a bit. Not going all the way back to the way I was eating before. I did start eating more carbs and sweets than I was when I was on the Maker’s diet. Always using natural sweeteners like honey and maple syrup. Both which are not good for glycemic levels.

During the time I read Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon and The Omnivores Dilemma by Micheal Pollan.

All these books talk about the importance of getting good quality meat – grassfed meat. It is healthier than conventional meat with more vitamins and leaner cuts.

In the book “The Omnivores Dilemma”, there are several meals described that trace all the way back to the source. In the conventional meal… everything traces back to corn.

Corn?

The conventional meat is fed corn based diets, the packed food is full of corn and its derivatives. Conventional food is sweeten, thickened, and made mostly of corn! Even Trim Healthy Mama talks about avoiding corn because corn makes us fat! Corn is used to fatten up these animals quickly… these animals are not healthy. So no wonder American’s are getting fatter with all the corn that is secretly ending up on our plates.

Corn also is very acidic and inflammatory in its nature – both are not good if we are trying to be healthy.

So with all this said, I have made the choice to be a Grassfed Mama. I’m not perfect by any means… but I’m consciously deciding not to be a cornfed mama.

Health tip of the day: Look at the food you are eating today. See how much corn is in the ingredient list. Look for:

Alpha tocopherol, Ascorbic acid, Baking powder, Calcium stearate, Caramel, Cellulose, Citric Acid, Citrus cloud emulsion, Corn flour, Corn oil, Cornstarch, Corn syrup, Dextrin, Dextrose (glucose), Diglycerides, Ethylene, Ethyl acetate Ethyl lactate, Fibersol-2, Fructose, Fumaric acid, Gluten, Golden syrup, High fructose corn syrup, Inositol, Invert sugar, Malt, Maltodextrin, Margarine, Monoglycerides, Monosodium glutamate (MSG), Polydextrose, Saccharin, Semolina, Sorbic Acid, Sorbitol, Starch, Sucrose, Treacle, Vanilla extract, White vinegar, Xanthan gum, Xylitol, Zein

  1. GREAT post. There is entirely too much corn and soy in our diets…amongst other sneaky ingredients making their way into everything (aspartame, gelatin…) Thanks for sharing!

  2. Love where you said you’re not going to be a cornfed mama. Seriously funny. Your list is astounding and disheartening at the same time. It’s like reading Greek when looking at labels, at least for me. For health reasons I follow a dairy and gluten free diet. We also eat grass-fed beef. If you don’t use honey or maple syrup anymore, what do you use for sweetener? We’ve been using Stevia.

    • I still cook things for Aidalyn with honey and sometimes coconut sugar. For me though, I use stevia because of my blood sugar crazies. We are basically gluten free here too. We are all the healthiest when we stick to it. Dairy, I probably did have some issues with. I was treated by my naturopath for my dairy issues and that cleared up.

Thank you so much for reading and leaving me a message : )
