Cooking Rice in the Instant Pot

Making rice in an Instant Pot is a game-changer! It’s quick, easy, and produces perfectly fluffy rice every time. Whether you’re a seasoned Instant Pot pro or a newbie in the kitchen, mastering the art of cooking rice in this versatile appliance is a skill worth adding to your culinary repertoire. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Rinse the Rice: Start by rinsing your rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This helps remove excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming sticky.
  2. Add Rice and Water: For most types of rice, the standard ratio is 1:1. That means for every cup of rice, add one cup of water. However, different types of rice may require slightly different ratios, so be sure to check the package instructions for specific guidelines.
  3. Seasoning (Optional): If desired, you can add a pinch of salt, a knob of butter, or a drizzle of oil to the Instant Pot along with the rice and water for extra flavor.
  4. Cooking Time: Close the Instant Pot lid and set the valve to the sealing position. Depending on the type of rice you’re using, select the appropriate cooking time:
  • White Rice: Cook on high pressure for 3-4 minutes.
  • Brown Rice: Cook on high pressure for 20-22 minutes.
  • Basmati or Jasmine Rice: Cook on high pressure for 4-5 minutes.
  • Wild Rice: Cook on high pressure for 25-30 minutes.
  1. Natural Release: Once the cooking cycle is complete, allow the pressure to release naturally for 10-15 minutes. This helps the rice finish cooking and allows excess steam to escape, preventing a mushy texture.
  2. Fluff and Serve: Carefully open the Instant Pot lid and use a fork to fluff the rice. Serve it alongside your favorite dishes or use it as a base for stir-fries, curries, or grain bowls.

With these simple steps, you’ll be able to make perfectly cooked rice in your Instant Pot every time. I personally serve my Red Beans with brown rice mixed with cauliflower rice to lower the carbs just a little. With the instant pot, you can say goodbye to soggy, overcooked rice and hello to fluffy, flavorful grains that will elevate any meal!
