I was first introduced to non toxic and healthier options for periods after I had my first baby in 2010 and decided to cloth diaper her after learning more about risks of conventional diapers. In the groups I was in, there were really only two options discussed: mama cloth (reusable cloth pads that were mostly homemade by other moms) and mensural cups. I ended up purchasing both to try out to see what I liked best (because in all honestly most of these products are really what you prefer and are very individual).

At the time, I was more comfortable using mama cloth (and I was already washing cloth diapers every other day, so it didn’t really seem like a big difference to me). After trying both options, I just wasn’t as comfortable with using a mensural cup. I do remember trying it right away, and I felt like it was stuck inside me and that feeling really stressed me out (which isn’t uncommon for me, haha!). The mama cloth was just a stress free way to start using non toxic period products and I didn’t think much about trying anything else for a while… but we will get to that later.

Understanding the Risks of Conventional Period Products

As we navigate the world of womanhood and motherhood, one topic that often gets overlooked is the potential health risks associated with conventional period products. Yes, we’re talking about the tampons and pads that many of us have been using since our own adolescence.

Conventional period products, while convenient, can contain a cocktail of chemicals that may not be so friendly to our bodies. Common ingredients include synthetic fragrances, dyes, and bleaches – all of which can potentially cause irritation, allergic reactions, or even more serious health concerns. For instance, some fragrances and dyes have been linked to hormone disruption, while the bleaching process can produce dioxin, a known carcinogen. Moreover, many of these products are made with non-organic cotton, which is often grown using pesticides. These pesticides can remain as residues in the cotton and come into contact with our bodies.

So, what can we do as moms, both for ourselves and our daughters? The first step is awareness. Understanding what goes into these products can help us make more informed choices. Look for period products that are free from harmful chemicals, fragrances, and dyes. Opt for those made with organic cotton or consider alternatives like menstrual cups or period underwear. Remember, our choices matter, not just for our health, but also for the health of our daughters who look to us for guidance.

    Exploring Natural and Non-Toxic Alternatives

Now that we’ve delved into the potential risks of conventional period products, let’s explore the world of natural and non-toxic alternatives. These options not only prioritize our health but also consider the health of our planet.

    1. Menstrual Cups:

These reusable silicone cups are inserted into the vagina to collect menstrual fluid. They’re free from chemicals, can be worn for up to 12 hours, and last for several years. While there’s a learning curve to using them, many women find them to be a comfortable and cost-effective option.

    2. Organic Cotton Tampons:

These are similar to conventional tampons but made from organic cotton, free from pesticides and bleaches. They’re a familiar option for those transitioning to natural products. However, like conventional tampons, they can still produce waste and need to be changed every few hours.

    3. Reusable Cloth Pads:

Made from absorbent fabrics, these pads are worn in the underwear like disposable ones but can be washed and reused. They’re free from harmful chemicals and can last for several years. While they require a bit more maintenance, they’re an eco-friendly and budget-friendly option.

    4. Period Underwear:

These are underwear with built-in absorbent layers to catch menstrual fluid. They’re reusable, comfortable, and come in various styles. They can be a bit of an investment upfront, but they last for a long time and produce no waste. In addition to being safer for our bodies, these alternatives have a significant environmental benefit.

By choosing reusable options like menstrual cups, cloth pads, or period underwear, we can significantly reduce the waste produced each month. Remember, transitioning to natural and non-toxic period products is a personal journey. What works best for one person may not work as well for another. The key is to explore your options, listen to your body, and make the choice that feels right for you.

Choosing the Right Product for You

As we continue our journey into the world of natural and non-toxic period products, let’s discuss how to choose the right product for you. Because, as we all know, every woman is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. When selecting a period product, consider your lifestyle, menstrual flow, and personal preferences. Here are some factors to keep in mind:

      1. Comfort:

This is paramount. Whether it’s a menstrual cup, organic tampon, cloth pad, or period underwear, the product should feel comfortable. Remember, comfort also includes peace of mind, knowing that the product you’re using is free from harmful chemicals.

      2. Ease of Use:

Consider your daily routine and how the product fits into it. For instance, if you’re often on the go, you might prefer a product that requires less frequent changes, like a menstrual cup or period underwear.

      3. Budget:

While some natural and non-toxic period products may have a higher upfront cost, many are reusable and can save money in the long run. Consider what works best for your budget.

      4. Menstrual Flow:

Some products may be better suited to heavy flow, while others may be ideal for lighter days. You might find that a combination of products works best for you.

      5. Environmental Impact:

If reducing waste is important to you, consider reusable options like menstrual cups, cloth pads, or period underwear.

Remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to period products. It might take some experimenting to find what works best for you, and that’s okay. The important thing is that you’re taking steps towards a healthier, more natural period experience. So, here’s to finding the perfect fit for your body and lifestyle.

        Tips for Making the Switch

As we wrap up our exploration of natural and non-toxic period products, let’s discuss some practical tips for making the switch. Transitioning to a new period care routine can feel daunting, but with a little guidance and patience, it can be a smooth and empowering journey.

        1. Start Slow:

There’s no need to overhaul your entire routine at once. You might start by trying an organic cotton tampon or a reusable pad on a lighter flow day. Gradually, as you become more comfortable, you can incorporate these products into your regular routine.

        2. Learn How to Use and Care for Reusable Products:

Each reusable product comes with its own set of instructions for use and care. For instance, menstrual cups need to be boiled before the first use and after each cycle. Cloth pads and period underwear should be rinsed in cold water before washing. Take the time to understand these instructions to ensure you’re using and caring for your products correctly.

        3. Be Patient with Yourself:

It might take a few cycles to get used to a new product, and that’s okay. Don’t be discouraged if you face some hiccups along the way. Remember, every woman’s experience is unique, and what matters is that you’re taking steps towards a healthier period care routine.

        4. Reach Out for Support:

If you have questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out. Whether it’s a friend who’s made the switch, a healthcare provider, or an online community, there are plenty of resources available to support you on this journey. Transitioning to natural and non-toxic period products is not just a personal choice, but a powerful statement. It’s about prioritizing our health, respecting our bodies, and caring for our planet. So, here’s to embracing this change with confidence and grace.

My Personal Experience with Non-Toxic Period Products

After I first started using non toxic period products in 2010, as you can imagine a lot more education came out about period health and more products were designed for the market too. After my third baby was born and weaned in 2020, I had my first period and really thought that I was ready to try some new healthy period products.

I first bought another menstrual cup, because I felt way more comfortable with my body and my period frankly than I did in 2010. My first menstrual cup was a Diva Cup and my second was a Saalt Cup. They both worked fine. I think the Diva cup was easier for me to use because it was a little firmer, but I think a lot of that depends on preference. You can take a quiz to see what products may work best for you here. I took this quiz and with my results I decided to try the Salt Cup.

The next product I decided to try was a Period Disk. After several of my friends shared how they preferred a disk way over using a cup or any other period product, I really felt like I had to give it a shot myself. At first, I noticed how much easier the disk was to insert and take out as compared to a cup. I feel like if you are just trying one of these products out for the first time, I may would recommend a disk because it really was that much easier. I feel like I may want to try a few more brands out as well before completely making the switch from a cup to a disk though for myself personally.

The final product I wanted to try were the ever growing in popularity – Period Panties (or Period Underwear). I first bought them for my teen, and she loved them so much she wanted to wear them all the time… I was thinking this couldn’t work for a mom like me… Right?? So I decided to put them to to test – because really that is what we are all asking ourselves – Would period underwear work for me?

After three kids and almost 40 years old, I’m probably a tough market to win on any sort of period product because I have sort of heavy cycles. But I wanted to give these an honest shot and here is my review.
